Cornhusker bird sings over the section line

Nebraska adopted the Western Meadowlark in 1929, the second of the six Meadowlark states. State motto: "Equality before the law." The Meadowlark doesn't care which county line it's on — it sings the same from Scotts Bluff to Omaha.

Where it fits

The Western Meadowlark is the official state bird of:

Oregon (1927) · Wyoming (1927) · Nebraska (1929) · Montana (1931) · Kansas (1937) · North Dakota (1947)

Six states. Plains, mountain, and Pacific Northwest. Same yellow-chested bird in every one.

Why a Meadowlark

  • It sings against the wind. Nebraska wind off the high plains is constant; the Meadowlark sings into it from a fence post.
  • The yellow chest is unmistakable. Visible against cornfield stubble in February or tallgrass in July.
  • It nests on the ground. No tree, no shelter belt, no excuses.

What "rebel" adds in Nebraska

Nebraska is Plains practicality, Cornhusker grit, and "the Good Life" lived by people who know what work costs. The Rebel Meadowlark is for the version of you that walks beans, hauls grain, runs the irrigation, or does the unglamorous work nobody posts about. Cornhusker character: place-rooted, plainspoken, neighbor-first, harder to bully than a stuck combine.
