The Ocean State's bird is a chicken that built American agriculture

Rhode Island adopted the Rhode Island Red in 1954. The breed was developed in Little Compton, RI, in the 1850s — and went on to become one of the most economically important chicken breeds in American history. A state symbol that fed the country.

Where it fits

Rhode Island's state bird, alone. A heritage breed unique to RI, now raised on small farms across the country.

Why a Rhode Island Red

  • It's the breed that fed America. Developed for both eggs and meat, hardy in cold climates, easy to keep — the workhorse of American small-farm chicken raising.
  • The red is unmistakable. Deep mahogany feathers, almost black tail. Distinctive heritage breed look.
  • It's still bred true to the standard. The Rhode Island Red Club of America keeps the line going. Tradition maintained.

What "rebel" adds in Rhode Island

Rhode Island is the smallest state and the only state founded on religious tolerance — Roger Williams' "lively experiment" in soul liberty. The Rebel Rhode Island Red is for the version of you that knows the Newport coast and the Pawtucket diner both, that keeps the historical society membership current, that helps the neighbor without making it a thing. Ocean State character: place-rooted, plainspoken, neighbor-first by reflex.
