Great Lakes' bird shows up first
Michigan adopted the American Robin in 1931, the first of the three Robin states. In a state where winter starts in October and ends in May, the Robin's return is the actual sign of spring — earlier than the calendar, more reliable than any forecast.
Where it fits
The American Robin is the official state bird of:
Michigan (1931) · Connecticut (1943) · Wisconsin (1949)
Three Northern states. Same red-breasted bird that means spring is finally on its way.
Why a Robin
- It's the first sign of spring. Marquette to Monroe: a Robin on the lawn means it's over.
- It runs across the grass and stops. A patient Michigan move — head cocked, listening, worm by worm.
- It nests anywhere. Garage rafters, porch lights, deck railings. Adapts to whatever Michigan has to offer.
What "rebel" adds in Michigan
Michigan is the Great Lakes maker state — Detroit factories, UP woods, and four real seasons including the brutal one. The Rebel Robin is for the version of you that fixes the snowblower in May, that takes the long way home through Sleeping Bear, that helps the neighbor unstick the truck. Great Lakes State character: weather-tested, place-rooted, neighbor-first by reflex.
